Pretty flower wreaths around cheeky, sweary or plain honest phrases: it looks like grandma’s embroidery until you read it. A fun first project for adult beginners and an easy gift for the friend who says what everyone is thinking.

Phrases: Nope · Take No Sh*t · Let That Sh*t Go · Don’t Be a Prick · Damndelion · Girl Boss · Beg No Pardon · Do No Harm · We Can Do Hard Things. The finished design shows the full word; the menu uses an asterisk.

What’s in the kit

These designs come from three makers, so the contents differ by design:

Nope, Girl Boss, Beg No Pardon, Do No Harm: pre-printed fabric, floss card with the floss, 2 needles, 6 in (15 cm) imitation-bamboo hoop, small scissors, printed pattern
Let That Sh*t Go, Damndelion, We Can Do Hard Things: pre-printed fabric, floss card with the floss, small scissors, 6 in (15 cm) imitation-bamboo hoop (the supplier does not list needles, so keep a spare embroidery needle handy)
Take No Sh*t, Don’t Be a Prick: pre-printed fabric, embroidery floss, 1 needle, pattern drawing, 8 in (20 cm) imitation-bamboo hoop (no scissors)

Size, skill level and time

Finished size: 6 in (15 cm) or 8 in (20 cm), depending on the design
Skill level: Beginner
Stitching time: about 3–6 hours
Stitches used: back stitch or split stitch for the words; satin stitch, lazy daisy and French knots for the flowers

How it works

Stretch the printed fabric in the hoop, then stitch over the printed lines using the colors shown in the photo. Start with the lettering, then fill in the flowers. Our free step-by-step guide shows how to set up the hoop, split the floss and do every stitch used here.

Good to know

For the 6 in designs the printed lines wash out with water, so don’t wash the fabric before you stitch.
Instructions from the supplier are basic; use our online guide for the stitches.
