Most pen-style punch needles thread in two stages: first through the hollow handle, then through the eye at the needle tip. A wire threader pulls the yarn through both paths. Once threaded, leave a short tail at the tip and keep the yarn supply completely free behind your hand.
If the yarn cannot feed freely, the loops will shrink or pull out even when your punching technique is correct.
Step 1: thread the handle
Push the wire threader from the needle tip through the hollow tool until the loop appears at the back of the handle. Put the yarn through the wire loop, then pull the threader back through the tool.
Step 2: thread the needle eye
Insert the threader through the small eye near the needle tip, catch the yarn and pull a short length through the eye. The exact direction varies by tool, so follow the included diagram when your pen is shaped differently.
Step 3: set the yarn tail
Leave roughly 1 to 2 inches of yarn outside the needle tip for the first punch. Do not knot it. After several stitches are secure, you can trim the starting tail close to the fabric.
Keep the yarn supply loose
Unwind a few feet of yarn before punching. Do not let the ball sit inside a bag, under your elbow or around another tool. The punch needle should be able to pull yarn with almost no resistance.
Why the yarn keeps coming out
The tail may be too short before the first punch, the yarn may be catching on the spool, or you may be lifting the needle too high between punches. Keep the tip close to the fabric surface as you move.
Check tool and yarn size
If thick yarn barely slides through the handle or eye, it is too large for the needle. If very thin yarn makes loose, unstable loops, try a smaller needle setting or fabric with a tighter weave.
FAQ
Do I knot punch needle yarn?
No. Punch needle loops are held by fabric tension and the packed stitches around them, not by knots.
How much yarn should I leave after threading?
A short tail of about 1 to 2 inches is enough to begin. Trim it after the first section is secure.
Why will my yarn not pull through the punch needle?
The yarn may be too thick, twisted, caught on the supply ball or threaded incorrectly through the eye.
Do all punch needles thread the same way?
The principle is similar, but tool designs differ. Use the threader path shown for your specific needle.
