Best Embroidery Kits for Adults: How to Choose One

Punch needle tool set, 12 pieces

The best embroidery kits for adults share four things: a pre-printed design, all the floss and needles in the box, a hoop, and a skill level that matches how much you have stitched. Pick those four and your first kit is much more likely to end up finished on the wall. This guide gives you six questions to answer and a short list of kits that fit each answer.

Everything here comes from our own product pages, so you can check the contents for yourself. Every kit also includes access to our free beginner embroidery guide, which covers setting up the hoop, separating floss and the basic stitches.

Embroidery kits for adults: six questions to ask first

1. What skill level do you need?

Our pages use two labels. Beginner means simple shapes and a small set of stitches, such as back stitch and satin stitch. Advanced beginner means dense color blending or fine details, such as the sky in the aurora kit or the fur in the highland cow kit.

If you have never stitched, start with a beginner-rated kit. If you have done a few small projects, an advanced beginner kit is a good next step.

2. Do you want to learn stitches or make a picture?

A picture kit gives you one finished design, and you learn while you stitch it. A sampler kit teaches stitches one at a time on practice fabrics. The Stitch Sampler Embroidery Kit prints the name of each stitch beside its row, and the larger Stitch Sampler Set of 4 covers over 30 stitches.

Samplers suit people who like to understand a technique before they use it. Picture kits suit people who want something to hang up. Both are good adult choices.

3. What size and hoop do you want?

Finished size is the size of the hoop. In our beginner range, kits finish at 6 inches (15 cm) or 8 inches (20 cm) across.

Hoop sizeKitsSkill level
6 in (15 cm)Aurora and Starry Night, Cozy Storefront, Mountain and WildflowersAdvanced beginner
8 in (20 cm)Mushroom, Wildflower Line-Art, Celestial Sun and Moon, Lemons, Cherries and StrawberriesBeginner
8 in (20 cm)Jellyfish on black fabricAdvanced beginner

Most kits include the hoop. The one exception is the Wildflower Embroidery Bookmark Kit: the supplier lists a small hoop as optional, so it may not be in the pack. Our guide to using an embroidery hoop shows how to set fabric in one.

4. How much time do you have?

Time depends on the design and on you. The bookmark kit is rated at about 3 hours of stitching. Designs with lots of open fabric, such as the line-art florals, generally go faster than designs with dense color fills.

We explain this in more detail in how long an embroidery kit takes. If you can only stitch for short sessions, choose a smaller or lighter design.

5. Light or dark fabric?

Light fabric makes pencil-thin lines easy to see. Dark fabric, such as the black fabric in the jellyfish kit, makes bright floss stand out but makes small details harder to see in dim light. Stitch near a good lamp either way.

The Celestial Sun and Moon Embroidery Kit uses navy or black fabric and is rated beginner. Its floss comes pre-sorted on a thread board, which helps with color numbers.

6. Is embroidery the right craft?

If you are not sure whether you want embroidery, cross stitch or punch needle, read cross stitch vs embroidery vs punch needle. Punch needle makes soft loops and fills a design quickly. You can browse the punch needle kits if that sounds better.

What to check inside any embroidery kit

Before you buy any kit, read the contents list. A complete kit should give you:

  • Fabric with the design already printed on it.
  • Floss in every color you need, plus needles.
  • A hoop, or a clear note that one is not included.
  • A pattern guide or color chart, and stitch instructions.

Some kits also include extras such as small scissors, a needle threader or a seam ripper. The sampler kits list small scissors, a threader and a seam ripper, and the mountain kits list a seam ripper. Many other kits do not list scissors, so a pair of embroidery scissors is a useful add-on.

Common mistakes when choosing a first kit

  • Choosing the hardest design because it looks best. A kit you finish beats a kit you abandon, so match the level to your experience.
  • Ignoring color. You will look at the design for hours, so choose colors and a subject you like.
  • Forgetting the hoop. Check whether one is included, as the bookmark kit is the exception in our range.
  • Buying a set before trying one design. A set of three or four is great if you know you enjoy stitching.

A simple path from first kit to confident stitcher

If you like a plan, try this order. Start with a stitch sampler or a beginner picture kit. Then move to a second beginner design in a subject you love.

After that, an advanced beginner kit will feel like a natural step. The stitches repeat from kit to kit, so each project makes the next one easier. Our embroidery stitches for beginners guide is a handy reference along the way.

Start with a kit, then build your supplies

Once you finish a first kit, you may want your own tools and colors. The Embroidery Starter Set has 50 floss colors, a hoop, needles, a threader and small scissors in a storage box. Our embroidery supplies for beginners guide lists what is worth buying and what can wait.

Browse all designs in the beginner embroidery kits category, or stitch samplers in the stitch sampler kits category.

Buying an embroidery kit as a gift

Adults enjoy kits as gifts because they take away the guesswork. For twelve specific ideas, see our embroidery kit gift ideas. For small add-ons, see stocking stuffers for crafters.

Shipping to US addresses takes about 2–4 business days to ship plus 8–15 business days in transit, so order early for the holidays.

FAQ

What is the best embroidery kit for an adult beginner?

Choose a beginner-rated kit with a hoop included, such as the wildflower line-art kit or the mushroom kit. If you would rather learn stitches first, the stitch sampler kit is designed for people who have never stitched.

Do I need extra supplies to use an embroidery kit?

Kits list floss and needles, and most include a hoop. Small scissors are not in every kit, so it helps to have your own pair.

Are embroidery kits hard for adults with no experience?

Not if you choose the right level. Beginner-rated kits use simple stitches and come with a pattern guide and access to our free beginner guide.

Is a bigger kit better value?

Bigger is not always better. A set of three or four gives more projects, but only if you want to stitch that many. A single kit is a lower-commitment start.
